Acamprosate, calcium acetylhomotaurinate, is a synthetic compound with a chemical structure similar to the amino acid neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and the amino acid neuro-modulator taurine. Acamprosate is available by prescription as a 333-mg tablet, and the recommended dosage regimen is two 333-mg tablets taken orally three times a day.
